Legal Responsibilities and Reasonable Accommodations
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, Baylor University has designated the Office of Access and Learning Accommodation (OALA) to evaluate, assess, approve and notify faculty regarding accommodations. Baylor is committed to ensuring that our diverse community has access to all aspects of campus life- learning, working, and living. When the design of academic and campus experiences present barriers, accommodations may be necessary. Federal law requires colleges and universities to provide reasonable accommodations for students who are registered with OALA. After reviewing of documentation by committee and our interactive process with each student, OALA may render reasonable accommodation(s).
Reasonable accommodations are meant to provide equal access to educational opportunities, programs, services, and activities in the most integrated setting, to the extent such requested accommodation(s) do not impose an undue hardship upon the College, constitute a fundamental alteration to a program or compromise academic integrity. All academic accommodations will be balanced with the specific parameters, core components, learning outcomes, and standards of each course. If a faculty member disagrees with OALA regarding the reasonableness of an accommodation, the case will be escalated to the Director of OALA, and, if needed, to the Associate Vice Provost for Student Access. If there is still no resolution, the case will be escalated to the Office of the Provost and the college’s legal counsel who will engage in a fact finding process and make a final determination.
If you have questions about reasonable versus unreasonable accommodations for your particular course, creating a syllabus utilizing universal design, resources, or any other inquiries regarding disability services and academic accommodations, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Office of Access and Learning Accommodation.
